Toss Crucial, Babar Azam Emphasizes Captaincy Not Hinging on India Win

Pakistan's cricket captain, Babar Azam, has highlighted the critical importance of the toss in the upcoming high-stakes encounter against India as part of the ICC World Cup 2023. In a pre-match press conference, he acknowledged that the toss has played a significant role in shaping the outcomes of matches thus far in the tournament. Babar Azam stressed the key impact of the toss, particularly in day-night matches where dew on the pitch can affect the game.

He mentioned, "Considering all the matches that have taken place so far, toss has been vital. Under the lights, the pitch behaves really well. There was dew as well last night. We will also ask the umpires about whether they will spray the outfield for dew." This emphasis on the toss underlines its crucial role in the game's dynamics.

Responding to questions about the immense pressure associated with captaining Pakistan against India, Babar Azam maintained a composed perspective. He conveyed that his captaincy does not hinge on the outcome of a single match, emphasizing the long-term nature of his role.

"I don’t think the future of captaincy depends on winning or losing against India. I have not been given captaincy just for this match," Babar Azam stated. This viewpoint reflects a steadfast commitment to his leadership role.

Furthermore, the Pakistan captain candidly addressed his less-than-ideal ODI record against India. Babar Azam acknowledged his underwhelming performance in the ongoing World Cup but expressed hope for improvement in his future matches. He also discussed his ODI record against India, attributing his dismissals to his own mistakes rather than any specific bowler.

"I was not able to perform in accordance with expectations, so far, in the World Cup but I’m hopeful that there will be improvement in my performance. As for my record against India, we only face each other during World Cups so there is a lot of gap between matches. I mostly got out because of my mistakes and not because of some specific bowler," he explained. This self-awareness and determination suggest a player committed to enhancing his performance.
